1) John 17:3

The First Commandment

You shall have no other gods.

What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

6) Matthew 28:19 (NIV)

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The Second Commandment

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.

Call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

The Third Commandment

 Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

15) Matthew 12:8 (NIV)

“ The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

The Fourth Commandment

 Honor your father and your mother.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.


16) Proverbs 23:22 (NIV)

Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

17) Ephesians 6: 2-3

“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”


The Fifth Commandment

You shall not murder.

 What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.

“Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.”

19) Proverbs 31:8 (NIV)

Speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.


The Sixth Commandment

 You shall not commit adultery.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and descent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

 22) Matthew 19:6 (NIV)

They are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.

The Seventh Commandment

 You shall not steal.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor’s money or possessions or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.

The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously.

24) 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (NIV)

If a man will not work, he shall not eat.


The Eighth Commandment

 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.

25) James 4:11

Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.

26) 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)

Love covers over a multitude of sins.

The Ninth Commandment

 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor’s inheritance or house, or get it in a way, which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.

27) 1 Timothy 6:6 (NIV)

Godliness with contentment is great gain.


The Tenth Commandment

 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor’s wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.

28) Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.
